Lead status
What a LinkedIn outreach sequence actually is
A sequence is the ordered set of touches a lead moves through — from first contact to a booked reply. Most LinkedIn tools let you build a sequence from scratch: drag steps around, set your own conditional branches, decide the order yourself. HootDM deliberately doesn’t. It runs one proven step order for every campaign, because a flexible builder mostly just gives you more ways to build something that doesn’t convert.
The HootDM sequence, step by step
- 1. Post like (optional warm-up) — a low-friction first touch that puts your name in front of the lead before you ask for anything.
- 2. Connection request — sent after your configured wait period, with an optional personalized note.
- 3. Acceptance check — HootDM checks your connections roughly every few hours and reconciles every pending request automatically, no manual list-checking required.
- 4. Initial message — sent once a connection is confirmed accepted.
- 5. Up to 3 follow-ups — each with its own configurable delay, for leads who haven’t replied yet.
- 6. Reply check — conversations are checked on the same interval as acceptances; a reply moves the lead straight to Won.
Why automatic detection matters more than the sequence itself
The step order is table stakes — every outreach tool has some version of connect-then-message. What actually saves time is not having to manually check who accepted or who replied. HootDM’s batch-check system runs on its own schedule per user (not per campaign), reconciling every pending connection and every open conversation in one pass, and updates lead status automatically. That means your lead list is always an accurate reflection of reality, not a snapshot from whenever you last remembered to check LinkedIn yourself.
What happens when a lead goes quiet
Not every lead accepts, and not every accepted lead replies. Rather than leaving those leads in limbo forever, HootDM closes them out automatically with a clear reason:
- Not accepted — the connection request sat unanswered past your configured timeout (14 days by default).
- No reply — every follow-up was sent and the lead never responded, closed after a final wait period (7 days by default) once the sequence completes.
A lead marked Dead isn’t deleted — it’s closed with a reason attached, so your funnel reporting stays accurate instead of showing a pile of leads stuck in limbo.
Common questions
Can I skip the post-like step?
Yes — the post like is an optional warm-up touch. If a lead doesn’t have a recent public post to like, or you’d rather go straight to a connection request, the sequence continues without it.
How many campaigns can run at once?
One active campaign per LinkedIn account, by design — see Safety & account protection for why.
Can I customize the wait time before each step?
Yes — the delay before the connection request and before each follow-up is configurable per campaign.
